Microsoft is reportedly canceling most direct Claude Code licenses, shifting engineers to GitHub Copilot CLI, just six months after opening access to Claude Code for employees. The rapid adoption of the tool has led to this reversal. However, the cancellation won't impact Microsoft's $5 billion Foundry deal with Anthropic, which provides access to Claude models and Azure compute capacity, as noted by The Verge.
Other tech companies are also scaling back AI usage. Uber's CTO revealed in April that the company exhausted its entire 2026 budget for AI coding tools in just four months, despite encouraging adoption through internal leaderboards.
These changes may signal caution among tech giants regarding AI investments. While some hope for an AI "renaissance," the costs of implementation are proving challenging. Bryan Catanzaro of Nvidia highlighted that compute costs often exceed employee expenses.
